In this project, students conducted a typographic scavenger hunt. Each student is assigned a letter, based on that letter they collect several image examples in relation to 10 categories: the letter itself, patterns/textures, location/geography, animals, logos, body parts, punctuation, shape and objects smaller than and iphone. Every item they collect must begin with the letter they were given while considering texture, line quality, organic vs. geometric and tonal values as you search for your objects. Illustrations, diagrams and scientific images are all fair game. The only caveat is that they cannot use imagery from the internet or take photographs. They must print and mount individually to a 4” x 4” square of bristol board.
Students then pair off in class to compare and review their findings and have a discussion about the different image qualities/textures.
